I haven't been able to get my arms around what happened this last week on the PATRIOT Act. My guy Russ stood up to the establishment and called this so-called "compromise" for what it was...a white wash. None of the really bad stuff has been removed from the new bill and in fact some things are worse!
From the Washington Post: "Critics of the act held their ground. Sen. Russell Feingold, D-Wis., insisted that the new civil liberties protections were cosmetic. "Americans want to defeat terrorism and they want the basic character of this country to survive and prosper," Feingold said. "They want both security and liberty, and unless we give them both _ and we can if we try _ we have failed."
And yet, 89 Senators (yes, a ton of Dems including Kohl), showed themselves to be either easily manipulated by B.S. or just flat our sold out our Constitution for no reason I can in anyway figure out either politically or strategically.
Consider this: The Conservatives are on the ropes. Bush has lost significant support even in his OWN party and the public has clearly HAD ENOUGH! Even Fox did a poll where they could only garner a 39% approval rating!
The framing the Liberals have been fighting is that they are weak and unprincipled. If not for the public perception of that, they would easily slip into power in November in a Nationwide sweep at all levels of politics.
So what do they decide to do on an issue that resonates across party lines and can really showcase them as different, stronger and smarter than the Radical Right that despises and is shredding the Constitution before our eyes? An issue that could really tell Americans "We stand for you, your rights and your security?"
I am really disappointed, and at the same time so proud of my Senator Russ Feingold. He may be the only (okay 1 of 10, but he's my Senator) truly brilliant and Patriotic politician left in this country. Wisconsinites voted for Russ 59% in 2004 largely on the cult hero status he's achieved for his lone vote against the original PATRIOT Act and Kerry in 2004 just squeaked by with a few votes more that 50%. That a full 9% of the electorate that voted for Russ and Bush polar opposites. The only corrolation between the two is that they both stick to their guns...(I actually met one of these people in my neighborhood a few weeks ago and he's still proud of his Feingold vote, but starting to rethink the Republican party and in particular Sensenbrenner because of his pig-headed stance to not fix the PATRIOT Act. He said he thought Sensenbrenner was a maverick, but now sees him for the party hack he really is...).
Other Wisconsin politicians should take note. If you want to win in Wisconsin, regardless of your party affiliation (yes, I'm talking to you too Sensenbrenner), you MUST take independent and courageous stands for us and our freedom. Fix the PATRIOT Act!
Wisconsin voters will stand for no less.
